Anything I can do to help?

Like saw them in half for you? :D

Seriously - Dont know if you have access to tools etc, I have a few bits and bobs. Routers table saws etc. So give me a shout if you need a hand. Would love to get my hands on those babies.

When My Thors are done (Boards are Arriving TODAY!!!) maybe we can do a soundoff. So far those have been the "Love of my life" speakers. Dont know why I have never bought a pair though.

Thanks! I will have to replace the frame at some stage due to water damage on the lower 10cm of the frame, but that seems like it would be very simple(okay maybe I am over simplifying matters ;) )

I seem to have two options(maybe three). Spend the money to restore them completely(have planar redone, rebuilt frame, put on new socks and manufacture feet) and either sell them or keep them. Else fix the current problem, re-sock them, make new frames, make some feet and enjoy them till I have decided what to do.

I tend to lean towards the last option at the moment as a complete restore will cost +- R5000 and if I do decide to sell them, I am not sure if I will recover the expense.

Mmm, I would go the second route

Direct from Magnepan they are $550 +- R4k. Shipping & imports would be about 2.5k.

I have seen these in reasonable good nick for R3k a couple of times.

Shaun - Yes lets do a sound off. Should be max 2 weeks till I am ready. Building the "Small" Thors. I decided that the "Short" version was far to large. Depth would have been close on 600mm which is to large for my place at the moment.

I got a response from an ex Magneplanar engineer on which glue to use and now I have to find something similiar. If anyone have suggestions, please don't be shy ;)

I quote his response:

If DAP Weldwood Cement is not available look for Selleys kwik grip. Many people report being able to find this, and it appears to be a near identical product. If not, you'll need to find a product that's acetone based which contains polymers or rubbers in it which allow for movement once dry. Ask local woodworkers who do veneer work what they use for glue, as it should be compatible.

Sounds like Genkem? Maybe give their hotline a call, I've found them to be quite helpful.

Alphabet - this is contact glue.

I would imagine that alcolin clear would also work though.

Thanks Gert and Byrd. It seems as if any of these would work.

I stripped both Maggies last night to access how many wires I will have to glue back and there is a fair amount of work to be done, but at least all the wires are in good condition with no visible corrosion.

Thus far there seem to be two products that will work to glue the wires back to the mylar and that is Alcolin Contact and Genkem Wood Weld. I have bought a tube of Contact to test and now all I need is the time to clean the areas with Acetone and start glueing, but damn I struggle to find the time >:(

I have also seen a good(read "easy") design for creating feet for the speakers and bought the wood for that yesterday.

Looking at the speaker binding posts, it may benefit me to replace those with decent binding posts. Any idea were I can find these? I have been to the usual suspects in Cape Town(Zakspeed, Yebo), but all they have are these crappy, plasticy connectors.
