Magneplanar SMGa
« on: November 28, 2007, 08:35:06 am »
I was given a set of Magneplanar SMGa speakers yesterday and after looking at their condition had no hope of them still working, but being an eternal optimist connected them up late last night.

To my surprise they worked and to quote the Home Network adverts, and that's not all! They sound better than anything I have ever heard! I expected good highs and mids, but more surprising is the prodigious bass these panels produce, not to mention the soundstage which is immense, high, wide and deep. Off course being planar designs, the same amount of sound is produced at the back of the speaker as at the front ;)

There was a slight problem with vibration on some low notes, but there could a be number of reasons. The speakers don't have there stands(feet) anymore and I rested them against my front speakers which could have contributed to the vibrations.

I used the NAD320BEE that normally does duties as a headphone amp to drive them and even at low volumes(between 7 and 8 'o clock) the sound remained "full".

My wife who normally asks "Now where are you going to fit that piece of equipment in?" actually asked if we would be able to have these "babies" renovated ;D

Now the question remains, does anyone know of someone who would be able to restore these speakers to their former glory, preferably in Cape Town?

Geesh, I agree!  >:(  Between Abe getting cool toys and F_D always quicker off the mark in the Classifieds it kinda leaves a sour taste in my mouth (or heartburn come to think of it)

Well, I hope it costs you R200k or something to get it fixed.

PS. I'm just sulking - please ignore me ;D ;D

The bottom of the "cabinet" will have to be looked at as it seems it has had some water damage, feet needs to be made and a recovering exercise will improve the visual appeal as the material used looks like a cat's scratchpole and due to the suspected water damage the bottom of the covering looks bad.

I need to speak to the lady who gave this to me to find out if her late boyfriend had some other treasures she would like to throw out ;D

The guys name is Chris, and he owns a HiFi shop in Middelburg (Mpumulanga). He's an expert on these, and even though it might be too far for you to it might be worth your while talking to him. I can get you his contact info if you want?

Lucky you!!

Rattle probably due to the "voice-coil" wires that came loose - due to age... - stick em back again.

With that water damage you'll need to have two new frames cut/made (easy peezy).

New "socks" can be made from black spandex.

New feet from tubelar steel.

Enjoy them...
