Live debate
« on: November 24, 2007, 07:41:31 pm »
The recent heated debate around certain (many, in fact) topics made me think of something. How would you, the members feel about a live debate on a nominated subject ?

Due to geograhical constraints its difficult for us all to get together and have an interactive 'personal' discussion. I was thinking more along the lines of selecting a convenient time and date for those that wish to participate and then enter into a nominated IM (instant messenger for you PC noobs ;D ) which we can all join in and thrash out our very opinionated views ;D

The forum does not yet support a chat function and we do not really want to have it as it may detract from the actual discussion format of the forums. However, for a particular subject this may be justified and a chance to interact on a more 'real-time' basis.

The topic and specifics can be worked out at a later stage and I am happy to host the discussion.

Furthermore I would specifically like to involve AVSA staff and its readers in this, how would you, the printed media ;D feel about participation ?

Please post ALL and ANY thoughts here and we can take it from there

Greg

I am Byrd,

Members of avforums, your end of days approaches. There will be no mercy

O Niell (2 L's ) : "Oh common who talks like that"
Carter: "That looks like Asgard technology, he must have downloaded it from  Thor"

There is nothing that can stop the destruction i bring upon you. Prepare to meet your ...... doom.

O Niell (2 L's ) : "Oh please"
Caution, whatever you read above, may, wonder of wonders, contain some level of jocularity.

One word of warning...

Live debates don't have the delays implicit in forum posts - delays that allow for a "cooling-off period" from stimulus to reaction - and, as a result, can get quite heated if not moderated effectively.

I've deliberately stayed out of the recent "robust debate" that developed as it showed all the signs of becoming a bit acrimonious...

What you may want to consider if you do decide to proceed with the live debate is to broaden the topic from the rather specific issue of bi-wiring to something along the lines of:

"If a statement cannot be supported by either objective, quantifiable and verifiable scientific evidence, and/or by accepted current scientific theory, then the individual making the statement is either misinformed, a liar or suffering from delusions!"

Moving away from "the specifics" to a generalisation can lower the "emotive index" to a mild roar...

Mmmmmm ...

Not to rain on the parade, but I tend to agree with Devillears (post #4).

My point: When the topic is something (e.g. cables) that has been so thrashed out without convincing anybody, will anything new come from a live discussion? I.e. I am not against a live discussion per se, but invariably the "hottest" subjects will only benefit if something fresh can come up, i.e. live blind tests or something of that nature.

Yes, dialogue would help, in the sense that an exchage of thoughts might sort differences out which cannot occur with written "dialogue", still I am on the sceptical side here.
'Miracles' are not contrary to Nature - they are only contrary to our understanding of Nature
