3D from projectors
« on: July 05, 2011, 08:23:30 am »
Hi all

3D from projectors seems to be a big grey area at the moment, projectors are being sold as "3D ready" but needing a PC with big graphics card to make it work. Does anyone have any input?

There are actually a number of 1080p 3D projectors out there. They operate the same way as most 3DTVs, active shutter glasses synced via infra-red.

Thanks Ken

Both the Sanyo and Vivitek (spelling?) need external PC and glasses. I would imagine all being linked HDMI 1.4
I should have more info from agents later today

Well there are two ways I know of. 1'st is the nVidia kit with a pc, as long as you have certified kit ( or cook the EDID ) and it works like a charm, plus you have the option to play games in 3D and that's REALLY good.

2'nd is to use the dlp part of the projector. they have glasses for them, but I have not seen them locally

Are you looking specifically for a 1080p 3D projector or is 720p okay for you?

The 1080p 3D projectors like the Sony VPL-VW90ES, JVC DLA-X3 and Sharp XV-Z17000 are quite pricy but there are a lot of cheaper 720p options such as the upcoming Optoma gaming projector, the GT720. Optoma also has a number of projectors that can be converted to 720p 3D using their 3D-XL converter box.

How about two projetors & Polaroid glasses?
I saw some 3D videos at the Everard Reed gallery in the mid '80s. They were using two three-tube CRT projectors, and a pair of gen-locked U-matic video cassette recorders.

I came across the optoma 3G xl for the first time last night in the what Hifi.
Reviews seem a bit mixed. I've got an hd65 which requires a firmware update then it'll be compatible with the 3d xl. I wonder if it'll be worth doing. I must say I'm not sold on the 3G tech yet.

Sorry Ken, I stand corrected.

Not about right or wrong. My point is I don't see any reason to fuss with a PC to convert frame sequential to side by side when there are proper 3D projectors available.

I agree, but this customer is a pain. The 535 is "3D ready" what ever that means. I did not want to sell him the concept of 3D but he insisted and his budget was low. I glasses alone are R2000 a go. Family of five? I told him to rather spend his money on a decent projector but did not win, now he has come back to me wanting 3D
