Luxman PD284 TT
« on: June 29, 2011, 06:24:22 pm »
Picked this up a few weeks ago. Has responded well to a thorough cleanup. Listening reveals some potential. Apart from good sound it is beautifully made (love that deep platter) and lovely to use. Anyone know what arm it is wearing. I have seen a similar one on an expensive-ish JVC. Fairly light so should suit the likes of shure M97 etc. Ideas on upgrades? It's plinth is shallow and a little flimsy, so might benefit from a sub-plinth.
How can there be no Beeno?

Never argue with an idiot. The people watching might not know the difference.

Hey Rudi - depends who is reading this thread ;). But there are no mine shafts in Pretoria so that is not an option.

Although i did not have an opportunity to listen to one, during the late seventes Luxman had a turntable with a mechansim that could create a hydraulic pressure by sucking the platter downwards, in order to improve sound quality.

Ja I remember seeing one of those - a beautiful machine. I'm not sure that it was a Luxman. Either that or a Micro-Seiki.

I have decided to do some zero/low cost upgrades, different cartridge (that Shure M95 should work well on this light arm) listen and then possibly over to the classifieds.

You may be thinking of the PD300. It had avacuum device to suck the record to the platter, thus flatttening the record and creating abetter bond. In the PD 300 and 310 the vacuum was manually created and in the flagship PD555 electrically. Luxman pioneered this system that was later adopted by SOTA and others.

Most Luxman turntables were made by Micro Seiki, some actually  saying that at the back and others using a code used by the Japanese denoting who was the OEM.

Here is an scan of a Luxman ad from peter's old dirty HiFi magazine collection...

I have now read beyond page 2 of that other thread about turntable upgrades - was unaware that it became so confrontational. I apologise if I have created the impression that I am trying to stir the pot here. In any event, I have had some interesting suggestions as to how I might sensibly get the best from this turntable - thanks.
