Well, after a few days of playing with different amps, and actively attempting to kill the F5 by moving it, plank an'all, to the big boys (Acoustats) room, I am more than pleased to report that:
- it survived the move... (and the move back to the bench; see the next post...)
- and not only that it drove the big Acoustats with unbelievable ease (even for Class-A) for a tinny 2x 25W, but it played like a dream! Everything I was hoping for was there.
- as expected, there was not a hint of any of that (AC?) noise that was still audible on the HE speakers,
- the "dark" is there, it is perfectly silent when it's supposed to be and incredibly gutsy when called for
- but the tone.... I'll insult someone again, I'm sure - it has that mystifying warmth of the tube amps (preamp was Musical Fidelity solid state!), but with all the steel-balls bass power & control of the solid state.
- Power: I never went over 50% on the preamp volume (for a heck of racket!), and MF Pre is nowhere close to the gain that Rud-e SRPP pushes out. Thus; 2x 25W is more than enough for my needs.

What can I say, after a couple of hours, it received an irrevocable sign of approval from me...

Now I'm ready; the work on the F5 #2 begins...

Before I start with the F5#2;

as I mentioned, the F5#1 was moved back to the bench for continued testing and monitoring of the temperature - definitely not the "all weather" amp - and I don't need a 300+W heater in my room, yet.

Playing it for most of the day yesterday and today (environment temp 25deg.), the heatsink temp went as high as 64deg. Woohaaa Nelly! Something has to be done about it if I'm ever to use it outside of the 3-4 months of winter...

And so the story of F5#2 caseless case begins... ;)

Case-less case; why waste space on sheet metal when I can use the heatsinks for everything? These are not even expensive, and the form, fit, function - it's all there.

Let's see, open like a Portugese chicken ;D

There's really not that many parts in the F5! And what is there, fits perfectly into the dimensions of this: http://www.mantech.co.za/datasheets/products/39663.pdf
Internal height 36mm, caps are 35mm.
At the "rear" of the case, 60mm of the transformer plus the wiring that sticks up from the transformer fits into the HS double volume like a glove.
Left-rear of the case gives me prefect space for the wiring and rectifier bridges - that run as hot as the MosFETS, I'll have you know! So, they get to stay on their own HS which acts as the case-bottom.
PCBs occupy very little of the "height", even with all the wiring that goes to the PCB.
Nice.

Now, this is the idea of PSU caps wiring (no more PCB):

Before you even consider this fancy ;) power resistor work, you'll need a Bantam Magnum, bruuu; best with a 5mm tip:

The additional small caps that see you are the secret to zero impedance of the last segment of caps in the F5 (R/L)CRC PSU configuration.
As promoted by Papa Pass himself for the Aleph PSUs and Jean Hiraga for all of his legendary Class-A designs.

Lets close the case (please note the dimensions - I promised you slim some time ago...):
Height:
Width:
Depth:

Happiness.

Final post, partially off-topic.

I had the fortune and the privilege of being visited today by some of my favourite people - Hugo (ApocalipseBoy) and Gideon (Ara), for fun, music, exchange of some goodies, but primarily talk, talk, talk (mostly me :-[)

We spent a great deal of time in the garage audio manufacturing facility listening to Rud-e SRPP & F5#1 and my Omni project speakers,
And then we listened to and enjoyed the BIG sound of Acoustats driven by Quad 99s with the usual MF preamp.
Squeezebox provided the digital and Thorens 125/SME the analogue sources.
And we talked, and talked and talked...

The bit that is on-topic: Hugo ("The Man") will be the executor of the milling and fitting of the multiple heatsinks into a thermally solid "block", as well as cutting the front and rear plates from 12mm thick (!!!) Alu blank, once I'm done fitting everything and drilling & tapping all the final holes.

But.... all this under one condition: I can choose ANY colour for HS anodising as long as it's black!

I guess I can live with that...?
;D

After hearing these the other night at Mikes place...  :o

Couldn't believe how good they sounded compared to what was hooked up to those speakers before. Well done, now hurry up and get the second amp done.  ;D

This will be what I start on next.  ;)
